Our governmental structure at our founding was one of a limited national government with a few designated responsibilities. The bulk of our governance was to take place at the state and local levels, thus the federalist system. Our governments were established to protect our natural right to life, property, and the liberty to pursue our social and economic interests. Free association and specialization permit us to meet our needs through civil society.
The means of production are in the hands of civil society. The remunerations that we receive is then used to provide for our basic needs of food, clothing and shelter. If we produce more than what we need to consume today, it can be used for wants or can be stored as wealth. Our individual wealth becomes available to entrepreneurs through capital markets to provide the goods and services which make our lives better. Individual desires are met as businesses compete for our wealth earned from productive enterprise.
Government by design is a monopoly which has been granted the use of force. That force when it is appropriately used is intended to protect our bodies from murder and assault and property from theft and fraud through policing and the judicial system. We expect equality under the law; no one is above or below the rule of law.
Governments do not produce wealth they abscond with it and to frequently waste it. Increasing its size ultimately reduces what’s available to society for productive means. When governments tax, borrow and inflate our financial resources, they make wealth producing people all less better off. The twentieth century is littered with governments that attempted to be the focus of production for their societies and which failed miserably with a trail of dead bodies as it forced its “good” intentions on their populations.
The Libertarian Party recognizes our citizens natural right to Liberty by promoting small governments, low taxes and the peaceful exchange of goods and services through the free-market pricing system.
